“So this is the Miranda I’ve heard so much about,” Anj said, taking her hand and putting it to his lips. Always the charmer. His being married never stopped him from flirting a tiny bit. Then again, if he wasn’t being witty and suave, chances were he was sick or dying. It just wasn’t in his nature, and that’s why Zes held off on introducing them for so long. Distance was only the cover-up excuse.

Blind at birth, Anj did have the ability to use a sight spell that lasted for no more than an hour. Usually, he only used it for studying. Apparently, he needed to see what Miranda looked like because he used it to give her a once over…three times. “She’s different. This is good.”

“Oh my gosh…” Zes whispered. Louder, “I told you she was like us.”

“I meant different from your other girlfriends,” Anj said. Zes knew what he’d meant, but had wanted to cover that up so poor Miranda wasn’t mortified. Because Anj was also blunt and often a jerk about it.

Zes pressed the palm of his hand to his forehead and mouthed a “sorry” to her. He’d prepared her for the moment, but there wasn’t a way to fully do it because the whole spectrum of his brother was too hard to contain. Anj could say anything. He was too unpredictable, and he thrived on attention.

His twin let go of her hand. “I heard that, you know. I promise, I meant it as a compliment. You’ve got a completely unique aura, and it’s awesome.”

“Be glad I got thick skin, Anj. Another girl would still take that as a diss.” She laughed all the same, and Zes was relieved to note she’d never been offended in the first place. “I’ve heard a lot about you too.”

“I’m sure most of it is lies,” Anj stated.

She snorted. “No, pretty sure it’s all true because I knew you’d say that.”

He gasped. “Now I want to know what he’s been saying about me!”

“I’ll never talk!”

So far so good. They seemed to be hitting it off well. If Anj liked her, that meant he could win over Jewl eventually. She was always the least trusting of everyone. As she approached them slowly, Zes noticed she didn’t wear her usual agitated frown that came along with meeting anyone new. She wasn’t smiling, but she wasn’t agitated. She definitely seemed curious.

“I suppose we have to give her a tour of the campus,” Jewl said.

“I can do that later,” Zes offered. “It’s been a long drive, so keeping it low key sounds great.” He knew Jewl would love low key.

She raised an eyebrow. “If you think you can get out of being embarrassed, you’re out of luck. This one is determined to do it no matter what.” She pointed at Anj.

He pretended to search the room. “What? Who would dare!”

“I told him to keep it to a level two or three,” she said weakly.

Miranda gave Zes a small kiss on the cheek. “Your family is a lot nicer than mine. They always go to eleven.”
